Regular Season Round 26: Marinos - Panteras 90-86
Date: February 24, 2016
There was no surprise in Puerto La Cruz where 8th ranked Panteras (7-14) were defeated by second ranked Marinos (15-6) 90-86. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Marinos players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Panteras were plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. The former international forward Juan Herrera (197-81) orchestrated the victory by scoring 21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). American-Georgian point guard Corey Fisher (186-88, college: Villanova, agency: Octagon Europe) contributed with 17 points and 5 assists for the winners. Five Marinos players scored in double figures. Marinos' coach Sergio Valdeolmillos allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international power forward Luis Julio (201-80) replied with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 16 rebounds (on 13-of-17 shooting from the field) and American Trey Gilder (206-85, college: Northwestern St.) added 27 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Panteras. Defending champion maintains second position with 15-6 record having just one point less than leader Bucaneros. Panteras lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 14 games lost. Marinos will again play against Panteras (#8) in Caracas in the next round where they are favorite. Panteras will have a break next round.
