Regular Season Round 18: Ethnikos - Faros 86-85 OT

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of top-ranked Faros (14-3) in Piraeus on Saturday night. Visitors were edged by third ranked Ethnikos (13-4) in overtime 86-85. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 9-point lead at the halftime then Faros managed to tie the game at the end of regular time. However that was Ethnikos who were better in overtime eventually winning that period 7-6. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Faros helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Power forward Andronikos Gizogiannis (200-83, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 15 points and 6 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and guard Fotis Vasilopoulos (187-86) chipped in 8 points and 14 assists during the contest. Four Ethnikos players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Vaggelis Karaboulas (198-81) with 28 points and point guard Nikos Liakopoulos (188-83, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 20 points and 9 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Ethnikos maintains third position with 13-4 record behind leader Faros. Newly promoted Faros still keeps top place with three games lost. They share the position with Kymis. Ethnikos are looking forward to face Promitheas (#4) in Patras in the next round. Faros will play against Pefkohori and is hoping to win this game.
