Regular Season Round 21: Burgos - Mondragon 82-96

There was a small surprise when eleventh ranked Mondragon (5-12) beat on the road 9th ranked Burgos (6-10) 96-82 on Saturday. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Mondragon's pressure prevailed and they won that period 27-20 extending their advantage to 14 points. They made 23-of-29 free shots (79.3 percent) during the game. Burgos was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. Andoni Aranzabal (188-91) stepped up and scored 25 points for the winners and power forward Benat Barberena (204-89) chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds. Five Mondragon players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American-British center Gerald January (201-88, college: Montevallo) with a double-double by scoring 26 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists and forward Alvaro Gomez (192-84) scored 13 points. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Mondragon maintains eleventh place in Group A-A with 5-12 record. Loser Burgos dropped to the tenth position with ten games lost. Mondragon will face Venta de Banos (#13) at home in the next round.
