Regular Season Round 20: Ethnikos - Doxa Pefkon 87-81

Everything went according to plan in Piraeus where third ranked Ethnikos (14-5) won against 12th ranked Doxa Pefkon (6-12) 87-81 on Saturday. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-18. But Doxa Pefkon won second period 19-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Ethnikos won last quarter 25-16. They also forced 22 Doxa Pefkon turnovers. Doxa Pefkon was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was guard Fotis Vasilopoulos (187-86) who scored 19 points and 4 assists. Power forward Andronikos Gizogiannis (200-83, agency: Octagon Europe) chipped in 7 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Four Ethnikos players scored in double figures. Guard Pavlos Topalis (194-88) produced 12 points and 7 rebounds and Icelandic center Sigurdur Thorsteinsson (204-88) added 7 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ethnikos maintains third position with 14-5 record having just two points less than leader Faros. Newly promoted Doxa Pefkon keeps the twelfth place with 12 games lost. Ethnikos will face Filippos Veroias (#13) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Doxa Pefkon will play against the league's leader Faros and hope to win that game.
