Regular Season Round 39: Cocodrilos - Guaros 84-79

Round 39 in LPB means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Caracas where host Cocodrilos (18-14) beat league's leader Guaros (17-11) 84-79 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Guaros. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Guaros won third quarter 25-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Cocodrilos dominated on the defensive end, holding Guaros to just 6 points in second quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Guaros' 34. Cocodrilos looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The game was dominated by American players. The best player for the winners was guard Carl Elliott (193-83, college: G.Washington) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points and 11 assists. Forward Tony Mitchell (203-92, college: N.Texas) chipped in a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Damien Wilkins (198-80, college: Georgia, agency: Priority Sports) who recorded 20 points and 7 rebounds and guard Tyshawn Taylor (191-90, college: Kansas) added 14 points and 5 assists respectively. Five Cocodrilos and four Guaros players scored in double figures. Guaros' coach Nestor Garcia rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Cocodrilos keep a position of league leader. Defending champion Guaros dropped to the second place with 11 games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Marinos. Guaros will play next round against Gaiteros trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Cocodrilos will try to continue on its current victory against first ranked Marinos in Puerto La Cruz.
