Rather predictable result in Broadmeadow where second ranked Newcastle Hunters (4-1) defeated 4th placed Crusaders (2-2) 74-65 on Saturday. Newcastle Hunters forced 20 Crusaders turnovers. Crusaders were plagued by 34 personal fouls down the stretch. Puerto Rican-American guard Justynn Hammond (196-87, college: Rogers St.) stepped up and scored 31 points and 4 steals for the winners and the former international power forward Russell Hinder (208-79, college: Augusta) chipped in 19 points and 9 rebounds. Forward Callum Jenkins responded with 16 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and Steve Mackay scored 7 points and 7 assists. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Newcastle Hunters maintains second place in League with 4-1 record having just five point less than leader Geelong S. Loser Crusaders dropped to the fifth position with two games lost. Newcastle Hunters will face Bankstown Bruins (#3) in Condell Park in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Crusaders will play at home against Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and hope to win that game.
