Regular Season Round 4: Jurmala - VEF Riga 71-74

Date: October 12, 2016
The most exciting game of round 4 in the LBL took place in Jurmala. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 7th ranked Jurmala (2-3) to top-ranked VEF Riga (3-0) 74-71 on Wednesday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Jurmala was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 26-20 charge of VEF Riga, which allowed them to win the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Janis Blums (191-82) who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 5 assists and American guard Kris Richard (196-89, college: Tulane) who added 12 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Richard is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the losing side center Viktors Iljins (212-91) responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 13 rebounds and guard Ugis Pinete (194-91) scored 16 points and 7 rebounds. Four Jurmala players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. VEF Riga have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 3-0 record having 2 victories less than leader Ventspils. Jurmala lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh place with three games lost. VEF Riga will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Jurmala will play on the road against the league's leader Ventspils (#1) and is hoping to prove to their fans that they can break losing series.
