Regular Season Round 5: Helmi Basket - Kouvot 66-68

Bottom-ranked Helmi Basket (0-4) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 68-66 loss to fourth ranked Kouvottaret (3-2) in Helsinki on Friday evening. The guests trailed by 8 points at the halftime before their 36-26 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Kouvottaret forced 29 Helmi Basket turnovers. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Kouvottaret made 8 blocks. American forward Whitney Frazier (180-92, college: Louisiana Tech, agency: Merit Management Group) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds for the winners and her fellow American import point guard Khadijah Sessions (173-93, college: S.Carolina, agency: Merit Management Group) chipped in 25 points and 4 assists. Guard Nina Augustin (168-97) responded with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists and international center Helmi Tulonen (189-98) produced a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds. Helmi Basket's coach Pekka Salminen rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Newly promoted Kouvottaret maintains fourth place with 3-2 record, which they share with Catz. Helmi Basket at the other side, also newcomer in the league, still closes the standings with four games lost. Kouvottaret will meet at home Catz Lappeenranta (#4) in the next round. Helmi Basket will play against Peli-Karhut (#9) in Kotka and hopes to get finally their first victory.
