Date: October 23, 2016
Valur can celebrate their first win this season after four consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat Grindavik (1-4) 103-63 on Sunday. Valur dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Grindavik's 38 and made 21-of-24 free shots (87.5 percent) during the game. Valur forced 22 Grindavik turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 34 assists comparing to just 17 passes made by Grindavik's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Valur made 9 blocks. American forward Mia Loyd (180-94, college: N.Dakota) stepped up and scored 30 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and the former international guard Hallveig Jonsdottir (180-95) chipped in 22 points. American swingman Ashley Grimes (175-91, college: UAB) responded with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds and forward Iris Sverrisdottir (175-90) scored 11 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Valur left bottom position moving up to sixth place, which they share with Haukar and Grindavik. It was Grindavik's fourth loss in a row. Valur will meet league's leader Keflavik on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Grindavik will play against the league's second-placed Snaefell (#2) and hope to win that game.
