Regular Season Round 5: Sokhumi - Olimpi 89-81

Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Tbilisi: Sokhumi (#8) and Olimpi (#6). Sokhumi (1-4) won against visiting Olimpi (1-4) 89-81. It looked good early as Olimpi took a 7-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Sokhumi had a 24-14 second period charge getting the lead and Olimpi was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 81-89. Sokhumi shot 23 for 32 from the free-throw line, while Olimpi only scored two points from the stripe. Olimpi was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard Dwayne Lathan (190-89, college: Indiana St.) orchestrated the victory by scoring 28 points and 6 rebounds. His fellow American import point guard Phillip Miller (185-91, college: Wiley) contributed with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 assists for the winners. Four Sokhumi players scored in double figures. American guard Tre Burnette (196, college: S.Dakota) answered with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds and Levan Maskhulia (200-96) added 19 points in the effort for Olimpi. Olimpi's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Sokhumi left bottom position moving up to sixth place, which they share with defeated Olimpi. Sokhumi will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Olimpi's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tbilisi Cactus Tbilisi.
