Regular Season Round 6: Melbourne - Townsville 72-74

Important game to mention about took place in Melbourne. Fourth ranked Townsville Fire (5-3) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging 7th ranked Boomers (3-6) 74-72 on Sunday evening. It looked good early as Boomers took a 1-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Townsville Fire had a 11-9 second period charge getting the lead and Boomers were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 72-74. Townsville Fire made 16-of-19 charity shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Boomers were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Naturalized Croatia center Suzy Batkovic-Brown (195-80) scored 16 points and 8 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and forward Darcy Garbin (185-94) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was swingman Alice Kunek (187-91) with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and American guard Brittany Smart (175-85, college: Cedarville) scored 19 points and 7 rebounds. Boomers' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Townsville Fire have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Dandenong and Bendigo. Boomers lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with six games lost. Townsville Fire will play against Canberra Capitals (#5) on the road in the next round. Boomers will play against Dandenong Rangers and hope to get back on the winning track.
