Regular Season Round 12: Comunicaciones - Salta Basket 80-72

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 5th ranked Salta Basket's (4-6) road loss to fourth ranked Comunicaciones (6-4) in Mercedes 72-80 on Monday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 28-17. But Salta Basket won second period 15-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Comunicaciones made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Salta Basket was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for Ariel Pau (184-84) who led his team to a victory with 18 points and 4 assists. Cameroonian power forward Gaston Essengue (203-83, college: UNLV) contributed with 17 points and 4 steals for the winners. Comunicaciones' coach Fernando Rivero used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American-Venezuelan Clarence Matthews (201-83, college: Tennessee St.) replied with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds and Nicolas Copello (194-92) added 12 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Salta Basket. Four Salta Basket players scored in double figures. Comunicaciones moved-up to third place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Salta Basket keeps the fifth position with six games lost. Comunicaciones will face Mitre Tuc. (#7) in Tucuman in the next round. Salta Basket will play on the road against Obera TC and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
