Regular Season Round 10: Chalons-Reims - Le Mans 98-89

There was a minor upset when higher ranked Le Mans (5-5) was defeated on the road by eleventh ranked Chalons-Reims (5-5) 98-89 on Friday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Le Mans won fourth quarter 27-26. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Chalons-Reims shot 64.9 percent from the field. They shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 58.3 percentage. Chalons-Reims looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Le Mans' players. American forward Steven Smith (203-83, college: La Salle) fired 25 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Dutch center Nicolas de Jong (210-88) chipped in 19 points (perfect from the field making all eight shots !!!). Canadian guard Olivier Hanlan (193-93, college: Boston Coll.) produced 25 points (made all of his nine free throws !!!) and naturalized Ivorian guard Pape-Philippe Amagou (186-85, agency: BeoBasket) added 16 points respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Chalons-Reims moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 5 other teams including defeated Le Mans. Chalons-Reims will face higher ranked Pau-Lacq-Orthez (#4) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Le Mans will play against Entente Orleans 45 and hope to win that game.
