Regular Season Round 19: Akita NH - Sendai 89ers 88-72

There was a minor upset when 4th placed Sendai 89ers (6-13) were defeated on the road by sixth ranked Akita Happinets (5-14) 88-72 on Sunday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 10-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 88-72. Akita Happinets had a 31-19 advantage in offensive rebounds. American Kevin Palmer (198-87, college: Texas A&M-CC) fired 20 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Canadian center Scott Morrison (213-86, college: Portland St.) chipped in 17 points and 8 rebounds. Five Akita Happinets players scored in double figures. Akita Happinets' coach Makoto Hasegawa used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. American guard Wendell White (198-84, college: UNLV) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points and 18 rebounds and the other American import guard Masaharu Kataoka (190-85) added 18 points respectively for lost side. Akita Happinets moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Hokkaido L. Sendai 89ers lost their eighth game in a row. They keep the fourth position with 13 games lost. Akita Happinets will face higher ranked Kyoto Hannar. (#4) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Sendai 89ers will play against Ryukyu GK and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
