Regular Season Round 11: FC Barcelona - Gran Canaria 79-78

A very close game took place in Barcelona (derby !!!) between FC Barcelona and Gran Canaria. Third ranked FC Barcelona (8-2) got a very close home victory over 9th ranked Gran Canaria (5-6). FC Barcelona managed to escape with a 1-point win 79-78 on Sunday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Gran Canaria was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 23-19 charge of FC Barcelona, which allowed them to win the game. It was an exceptional evening for Greek Stratos Perperoglou (203-84) who led the winners and scored 16 points. Cypriot-Bulgarian Alexander Vezenkov (206-95) accounted for 10 points and 4 assists for the winning side. Latvian center Anzejs Pasecniks (216-95, college: VEF skola) came up with 18 points and 5 rebounds and American Royce O'Neale (198-93, college: Baylor) added 12 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Gran Canaria in the defeat. Four FC Barcelona and five Gran Canaria players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. FC Barcelona moved-up to second place. Loser Gran Canaria keeps the ninth position with six games lost. FC Barcelona will meet Andorra (#7) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Gran Canaria will play against CAI Zaragoza and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
