Regular Season Round 16: Orchies - Gries/Oberhoffen 89-80

Very expected game in Orchies where 16th ranked Gries/Oberhoffen (5-11) was defeated by seventh ranked Orchesien BC (9-7) 89-80 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 21-17. But Gries/Oberhoffen won second period 18-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Orchesien BC looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard Benjamin Smith (178-87, college: Jacksonville) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 6 assists and the other American import Marquise Simmons (203-89, college: St.Bonaventure, agency: Interperformances) who added 9 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side Lithuanian point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) responded with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists and American forward Gregg Thondique (201-87, college: Virginia Union, agency: Octagon Europe) scored 17 points and 7 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Orchesien BC have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They moved-up to sixth place, which they share with GET Vosges. Newly promoted Gries/Oberhoffen keeps the sixteenth position with 11 games lost. Orchesien BC will face GET Vosges (#6) in Golbey in the next round. Gries/Oberhoffen will play at home against Lorient (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
