Regular Season Round 9: Al Ahli - Al Gharafa 64-86

Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Doha: Al Gharafa (#5) and Al Ahli (#6). Al Ahli was crushed at home by 22 points 64-86 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Al Gharafa. Al Ahli was better in third quarter 18-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Al Gharafa dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Al Ahli's 26. They outrebounded Al Ahli 44-29 including a 13-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. Al Gharafa players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. American forward Sammy Monroe (198-85, college: Newberry) stepped up and scored 29 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for the winners and his fellow American import swingman Wayne Arnold (193-84, college: Tennessee St.) chipped in 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Monroe is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Serbian point guard Branko Jereminov (186-87) responded with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists and Serbian power forward Nemanja Miljkovic (204-90) produced a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds. Al Gharafa (3-1) moved-up to second place, which they share with 3 other teams. Al Ahli at the other side keeps the sixth position with three games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Al Gharafa's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha Al Arabi.
