Date: January 7, 2017
The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Avenir as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Avenir defeated 5th ranked Reims in Chartres 55-47. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Reims. Reims trailed by 16 points after 3 quarters before a 14-6 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 47-55 at the end of the game. Avenir dominated on the defensive end, holding Reims to just 6 points in first quarter. They also forced 24 Reims turnovers. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Avenir made 12 blocks. It was a good game for American forward Tiffany Clarke (183-91, college: Vanderbilt) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds. Point guard Magali Mendy (178-90) contributed with 18 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Avenir's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Swingman Clementine Samson (181-91) replied with 11 points and 9 rebounds and Montenegrin center Natasa Popovic (192-82) added 7 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks in the effort for Reims. Avenir (11-1) have an impressive eight-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Roche. Reims at the other side keeps the fifth place with five games lost. They share the position with COB Calais and SIG. Reims will play next round against SIG trying to get back on the winning streak. Avenir will try to continue on its current victory against twelfth ranked Dunkerque on the road.
