Regular Season Round 13: Sydney - Canberra 73-76

Important game to mention about took place in Sydney. Sixth ranked Canberra Capitals (8-8) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging much higher ranked Sydney Uni Flames (10-6) 76-73 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Sydney Uni Flames. After very bad start, Sydney Uni Flames stormed back in the second period cutting the deficit to 3 points 42-39. But it was not enough and Canberra Capitals took back the control in second half. They shot the lights out from three nailing 13 long-distance shots on high 68.4 percentage. Canberra Capitals brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. The former international center Marianna Tolo (196-89) nailed 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks for the winning side and guard Kate Gaze (173-90, college: St.Mary's, CA) accounted for 18 points (perfect behind the arc making all six shots !!!). Canberra Capitals' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Forward Carly Boag (188-95, college: Minot St.) came up with 15 points and 8 rebounds and the former international point guard Leilani Mitchell (165-85, college: Utah) added 11 points and 8 assists respectively for Sydney Uni Flames in the defeat. Four Sydney Uni Flames players scored in double figures. Canberra Capitals maintains sixth place with 8-8 record. Sydney Uni Flames at the other side keep the second position with six games lost. They share it with Perth and Bendigo. Canberra Capitals will play against higher ranked Townsville Fire (#5) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Sydney Uni Flames will play against Bendigo Spirit and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
