Regular Season Round 15: Haukar - Grindavik 69-47
Date: January 11, 2017
Bottom-ranked Haukar managed to get a fourth victory, breaking the series of six consecutive losses on Wednesday night. This time they outleveled seventh-ranked Grindavik in Hafnarfjordur 69-47. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 22-point difference suggests that Haukar is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. The game was mostly controlled by Haukar. Grindavik managed to win fourth quarter 16-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Haukar held Grindavik to an opponent 24.6 percent shooting from the field compared to 40.6 percent accuracy of the winners. Haukar forced 26 Grindavik turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. It was an exceptional evening for forward Rosa Bjork Petursdottir (174-97) who led the winners and scored 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Point guard Thora Jonsdottir (171-97) accounted for 9 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals for the winning side. Four Haukar players scored in double figures. The former international center Maria Ben Erlingsdottir (187-88, college: UTRGV) came up with 9 points and 8 rebounds and the former international guard Ingunn Kristinardottir (170-95) added 7 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Grindavik in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Haukar (4-11) moved-up to seventh place. Grindavik lost their fourth game in a row. They dropped to the bottom position with 12 games lost. Haukar will meet higher ranked Valur (#5) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Grindavik will play against the league's leader Keflavik where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
