Regular Season Round 14: Sokhumi - Mgzavrebi 93-81

Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Tbilisi: Sokhumi (#5) and Mgzavrebi (#8). Sokhumi (6-8) won against visiting Mgzavrebi (1-13) 93-81. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Mgzavrebi. It looked good early as Mgzavrebi took a 2-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Sokhumi had a 21-18 second period charge getting the lead and Mgzavrebi was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 81-93. Sokhumi made 26-of-32 charity shots (81.3 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Mgzavrebi was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Naturalized Azerbaijani forward Davit Barbakadze (203-82) notched 34 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 5 assists (perfect from downtown making all six shots !!!) to lead the effort and Ukrainian point guard Dmytro Zabirchenko (192-84, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) supported him with 6 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Sokhumi's coach Nugzar Cheishvili allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even 19 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists by American point guard Kaheem Ransom (185, college: Sam Houston St.) did not help to save the game for Mgzavrebi. His fellow American import center Reggie Murphy (208-91, college: Henderson St.) added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the guests. Five Mgzavrebi players scored in double figures. Sokhumi moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Cactus Tbilisi and Batumi. Mgzavrebi at the other side stay at the bottom position with 13 games lost. Sokhumi will play against higher ranked Energy Invest (#3) in Rustavi in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Mgzavrebi will play at home against Batumi (#4) to get more than just one victory in their record.
