Regular Season Round 29: Penarol - Instituto 88-82

Date: January 24, 2017
There was a minor upset when 4th placed Instituto (16-12) lost to sixth ranked Penarol (14-16) in Mar del Plata 82-88 on Tuesday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 25-16. But Instituto won third quarter 23-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Instituto was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. International center Roberto Acuna (208-90) orchestrated the victory by scoring 16 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). American guard Rob Reed (185-90, college: Concord) contributed with 19 points for the winners. Penarol's coach Marcelo Richotti used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. American swingman Rodney Green (196-88, college: La Salle) answered with 31 points and the other American import center Sam Clancy (202-80, college: USC, agency: DTMones) added 13 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Instituto. Penarol have a solid series of four victories in a row. Despite that victory Penarol went down to seventh position due to points difference. Loser Instituto keeps the fourth place with 12 games lost. Penarol will face league's second-placed Ferrocarril in Buenos Aires in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Instituto will play at home against GECR Indalo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
