Regular Season Round 29: Atenas - Penarol 85-77

There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Penarol (14-16) lost to ninth ranked Atenas (11-17) in Cordoba 77-85 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 5 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 2-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 85-77. Atenas shot 23 for 34 from the free-throw line, while Penarol only scored seven points from the stripe. They outrebounded Penarol 38-26 including 26 on the defensive glass. Penarol was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. American Pete Mickeal (199-78, college: Cincinnati) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 8 rebounds. His fellow American import power forward Roquez Johnson (201-92, college: Mississippi St.) contributed with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Five Atenas players scored in double figures. American guard Rob Reed (185-90, college: Concord) answered with 28 points and Alejandro Diez (201-87) added 14 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for Penarol. Penarol's coach Marcelo Richotti tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Atenas maintains ninth place with 11-17 record. Loser Penarol dropped to the seventh position with 16 games lost. Atenas' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Cordoba to the arena .
