Regular Season Round 16: Bendigo - Melbourne 76-69

Date: January 28, 2017
No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Bendigo Spirit (11-9) beat at home 7th ranked Boomers (4-16) 76-69 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-18. But Boomers won second period 24-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Bendigo Spirit won last quarter 15-9. They made 27-of-32 free shots (84.4 percent) during the game. Boomers were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for Canadian power forward Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (188-91, college: Simon Fraser) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points and 10 rebounds (made all of her seven free throws). American forward Kelsey Griffin (188-87, college: Nebraska) contributed with 7 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Guard Rebecca Cole (178-92) replied with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and forward Olivia Thompson (185-93) added 15 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Boomers. Boomers' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Bendigo Spirit moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Townsville. Boomers lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with 16 games lost. Bendigo Spirit will face Townsville Fire (#4) at home in the next round. Boomers will play against the league's leader Sydney Uni Flames and hope to win that game.
