Regular Season Round 19: Valencia - Gran Canaria 86-81
Date: January 28, 2017
Not a big story in a game when 8th ranked Gran Canaria (10-8) was defeated on the road by fourth ranked Valencia Basket (13-5) 86-81 on Saturday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 27-14. But Gran Canaria won second period 23-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valencia Basket looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. It was a great evening for Belgian point guard Sam Van Rossom (188-86) who led his team to a victory scoring 11 points and 6 assists. The former international swingman Fernando San Emeterio (199-84) helped adding 13 points. At the losing side American-FYR Macedonian power forward Richard Hendrix (203-86, college: Alabama, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) responded with 11 points and FYR Macedonian-American point guard Bo McCalebb (178-85, college: New Orleans) scored 12 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Valencia Basket maintains fourth place with 13-5 record. Loser Gran Canaria dropped to the seventh position with eight games lost. They share it with Andorra. Valencia Basket will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gran Canaria will play against Unicaja Malaga (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
