Second Stage Round 9: Gulbenes Buki - Saldus 78-79

A very close game took place in Riga between Saldus and Gulbenes Buki. Tenth ranked Saldus (3-13) got a very close victory on the road over 12th ranked Gulbenes Buki (1-12). Saldus managed to escape with a 1-point win 79-78 on Saturday evening. The guests trailed by 14 points after three quarters before their 33-18 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Saldus forced 25 Gulbenes Buki turnovers. The best player for the winners was guard Toms Karlis Broks (188-90) who scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Point guard Edgars Buikis (180-84) chipped in 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Saldus' coach Edgars Buikis used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the other side the best for losing team was center Roberts Mednis (205-89) who recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and guard Nauris Rikveilis (189-94) added 18 points and 8 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Saldus maintains tenth place with 3-13 record. Gulbenes Buki lost their fifth game in a row. They keep the twelfth position with 12 games lost. Saldus will meet league's leader Turiba on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Gulbenes Buki will play against the league's second-placed Kekava (#2) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
