Regular Season Round 25: Al Shamal - Al Wakrah 74-107

There was a small surprise in Doha where eleventh ranked Al Wakrah (3-9) smashed 8th ranked Al Shamal (4-8) 107-74 on Tuesday. The game without a history. Al Wakrah led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Al Shamal's 58. They outrebounded Al Shamal 67-29 including a 37-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Al Wakrah looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. American-Nigerian forward Olatunbo Ayeni (196-87, college: St.Francis, NY) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 32 points and 23 rebounds for the winners and American guard Larry Blair (183-84, college: Liberty) chipped in 31 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Ayeni is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. At the losing side guard Elhag Ali Saleh (191) responded with 21 points and 5 rebounds and swingman Abdul Kosar (192) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Al Wakrah moved-up to ninth place. Loser Al Shamal dropped to the sixth position with eight games lost. Al Wakrah will face higher ranked Al Arabi (#4) in Doha in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
