Regular Season Round 6: Santiago - Capitalinas 50-68

Date: February 2, 2017
Very significant was Capitalinas' (#1, 5-1) victory against 3rd ranked Santiago de Cuba (3-3) 68-50. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Santiago de Cuba. It looked good early as Santiago de Cuba took a 3-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Capitalinas had a 19-6 second period charge getting the lead and Santiago de Cuba was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 50-68. Capitalinas dominated on the defensive end, holding Santiago de Cuba to just 6 points in second quarter. Capitalinas forced 22 Santiago de Cuba turnovers. Strangely Santiago de Cuba outrebounded Capitalinas 26-14. Point guard Dairis Tornell (176-92) notched 12 points to lead the effort and international Suchitel Avila (184-82) supported her with 10 points. Even 18 points by Dislaine Vicente did not help to save the game for Santiago de Cuba. Forward Arianne Mena (182-85) added 4 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Capitalinas have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 5-1 record. Santiago de Cuba at the other side keeps the third place with three games lost. They share the position with Guantanamo. Capitalinas will play against Guantanamo (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Santiago de Cuba will play against Pinar in Rio and hopes to get back on the winning track.
