Date: February 7, 2017
There was a minor upset when 4th placed Santiago (2-3) was defeated at home by sixth ranked Capitalinos (2-3) 85-79 on Tuesday. Strangely Santiago outrebounded Capitalinos 27-12 including a 18-5 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Capitalinos made 8 blocks. International forward Karel Guzman (188-95) stepped up and scored 38 points (!!!) and 6 steals for the winners and Neysser Coutin (-96) chipped in 15 points and 5 steals. Guard Roigelis Ochoa (190-93) responded with 14 points and 8 rebounds and point guard Julio Heredia (183-93) scored 16 points and 6 assists. Four Santiago players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Capitalinos moved-up to fifth place, which they share with defeated Santiago. Capitalinos will meet higher ranked Guerreros (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Santiago will play against Guantanamo and hope to secure a win.
