Regular Season Round 6: Ciego de Avila - Pinar del Rio 55-69
Date: February 8, 2017
The game in Avila was also quite interesting. Second ranked Pinar (5-1) played at the court of 7th ranked Ciego (1-5). Pinar defeated Ciego 69-55 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Pinar. Ciego managed to win fourth quarter 16-13. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Ciego to just 5 points in second quarter. Pinar forced 20 Ciego turnovers. Strangely Ciego outrebounded Pinar 22-6 including a 19-4 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international point guard Osmel Oliva (178-87) notched 17 points and 4 steals to lead the effort and the former international point guard Yosiel Monterrey (185-88) supported him with 15 points and 6 steals. Even 21 points by the former international William Granda (189-85, agency: Pro Sports) did not help to save the game for Ciego. Forward Dariel Castellanos (198-96) added 10 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Pinar maintains second position with 5-1 record behind leader Villa Clara. Defending champion Ciego keeps the seventh place with five games lost. Pinar will meet at home Santiago (#5) in the next round. Ciego will play against Capitalinos and hope to win that game.
