Regular Season Round 34: Barreteros - Abejas 84-72

Rather expected game when 9th ranked Abejas (10-25) lost to sixth ranked Barreteros (15-18) in Zacatecas 72-84 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Barreteros. Abejas managed to win second period 20-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Barreteros looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American forward Matt Gwynne (208-87, college: Campbell) notched 21 points and 5 rebounds to lead the effort and the other American import guard Paul Marigney (192-82, college: St.Mary's, CA) supported him with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Barreteros' coach Lawrence Lessett used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. Even a double-double of 21 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists by Dominican power forward Manuel Guzman (204-82, college: Bemidji St.) did not help to save the game for Abejas. American forward Steffphon Pettigrew (196-89, college: W.Kentucky, agency: HMS) added 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Newly promoted Barreteros maintains sixth position with 15-18 record. Loser Abejas keep the ninth place with 25 games lost. Barreteros will again meet at home Abejas (#9) in the next round. Abejas will have a break next round.
