Regular Season Round 22: Valmiera - VEF Riga 90-95

Very important is a home loss of second ranked Valmiera (14-8) against fourth ranked VEF Riga (11-2) on Wednesday night. Host Valmiera was defeated by VEF Riga in a tough game in Valmiera 90-95. Valmiera was ahead by 4 points at the halftime before a 50-41 second half run of VEF Riga. They shot the lights out from three nailing 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. VEF Riga players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. American guard Kris Richard (196-89, college: Tulane) notched 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and international forward Mareks Mejeris (208-91, agency: Players Group) supported him with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Richard is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. VEF Riga's coach Janis Gailitis allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Even 17 points and 9 assists by American point guard Damier Pitts (177-89, college: Marshall) did not help to save the game for Valmiera. His fellow American import guard Ashton Mitchell (183-88, college: Sam Houston St., agency: Mansfield and Associates) added 9 points and 7 assists for lost side. Five VEF Riga and four Valmiera players scored in double figures. VEF Riga maintains fourth position with 11-2 record. Defending champion Valmiera keeps the second place with eight games lost. VEF Riga will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Valmiera will play at home against Liepaja/Triobet and hopes to get back on the winning track.
