Regular Season Round 24: Melilla - Burgos 77-66

Round 24 in LEB Gold means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Melilla where host Melilla Baloncesto (15-9) beat league's leader Burgos (16-8) 77-66 on Friday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Burgos. The game was mostly controlled by Melilla Baloncesto. Burgos managed to win third quarter 16-9. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Melilla Baloncesto won last quarter 27-17. Melilla Baloncesto outrebounded Burgos 42-31 including 30 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was Dutch forward Kevin van-Wijk (203-89, college: Valparaiso) who scored 14 points and 7 rebounds. Point guard Jorge Sanz (188-93) chipped in 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Eduardo Martinez (202-90) who recorded 15 points and 5 rebounds and center Javier Vega (205-88) added 11 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Four Burgos players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Melilla Baloncesto have an impressive five-game winning streak. Melilla Baloncesto maintains sixth position with 15-9 record. Burgos at the other side dropped to the second place with eight games lost. They share the position with Palencia and Oviedo. They were replaced at the leadership position by Gipuzkoa GBC. Burgos will play next round against Leyma Basquet trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Melilla Baloncesto will try to continue on its current victory against thirteenth ranked Caceres Basket on the road.
