There was a minor upset in Parana where 8th ranked Penarol (14-22) was edged by tenth ranked Echague (6-28) 71-69 on Monday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Penarol won third quarter 19-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Penarol was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Dominican guard Gelvis Solano (185-94, college: Merrimack, agency: Basket Management Solutions) fired 23 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. American center Derrick Caracter (206-88, college: UTEP) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. The former international forward Leonardo Gutierrez (200-78) produced 15 points (made all of his seven free throws) and Alejandro Diez (201-87) added 12 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Penarol's coach Marcelo Richotti tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Newly promoted Echague maintains tenth position with 6-28 record. Penarol lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 22 games lost. Echague will face higher ranked Olimpico de La Banda (#7) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game.
