Regular Season Round 6: Punjab S. - Mumbai Ch. 125-123

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Mumbai Ch. (2-1) in Amritsar on Tuesday night. Visitors were edged by Punjab S. (2-1) 125-123. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Mumbai Ch.. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 11 points after three quarters before their 38-25 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Punjab S. made 27-of-31 free shots (87.1 percent) during the game. They also forced 23 Mumbai Ch. turnovers. Strangely Mumbai Ch. outrebounded Punjab S. 42-22 including a 29-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. 27 personal fouls committed by Mumbai Ch. helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Dermaine Crockrell (185-89, college: Bemidji St.) scored 51 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 5 assists (went 11 for 11 at the free throw line !!!) to lead the charge for the winners and international point guard Akilan Pari (180-89) chipped in 10 points and 8 assists during the contest. Crockrell is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Punjab S. players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American guard Alex Scales (192-78, college: Oregon) with 33 points (!!!) and 4 assists and Canadian Jimmy Scroggins (, college: Regina) scored 33 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Punjab S. keeps a position of league leader, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Mumbai Ch. Punjab S. is looking forward to face Haryana G. (#4) in Chandigarh in the next round. Mumbai Ch. will play on the road against Delhi C. and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
