Second Stage Round 1: Naft Abadan - Army 87-79

The biggest surprise of round 1 in Superleague took place in Abadan where host Naft Abadan (1-0) beat Army (0-1) 87-79 on Thursday evening. Army trailed by 17 points at halftime and as many as 20 after three quarters before a 38-26 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 79-87 at the end of the game. Naft Abadan forced 20 Army turnovers. The former international center Meisam Mirzaei (210-92) fired a double-double by scoring 17 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. The former international point guard Sajjad Mashayekhi (180-94) chipped in 17 points and 5 assists. Four Naft Abadan players scored in double figures. The former international Arsalan Kazemi (200-90, college: Oregon) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds and the former international power forward Saleh Foroutannik (207-94) added 14 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Army will play next round against Chemidor trying to make it back to the top of the standings. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will face at home their local rival from Tehran - Chemidor. Naft Abadan will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
