Regular Season Round 21: Cortegada - Barcelona 72-39
Date: March 5, 2017
No shocking result in a game when third ranked Cortegada (13-6) crushed 6th ranked Barcelona (11-10) in Vilagarcia Arousa 72-39 on Sunday. The game without a history. Cortegada led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Barcelona to just 7 points in third quarter. Cortegada forced 20 Barcelona turnovers and outrebounded them 43-23 including a 34-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for Cape Verdean-American guard Vandell Andrade (179-93, college: Le Moyne) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 19 rebounds. Senegalese center Amy Syll (196-93) contributed with 13 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Forward Ana Alonso (187-90) answered with 12 points and 4 steals and Gala Mestres added 6 points in the effort for Barcelona. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cortegada maintains third place in Group A with 13-6 record having five points less than leader Alcobendas. Loser Barcelona keeps the sixth position with ten games lost. Cortegada will face Ponce Valladolid (#14) on the road in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Barcelona will play against GDKO Bizkaia (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
