Date: March 19, 2017
There was no surprise in Athens where 10th ranked Aris Thessal. (5-14) was defeated by second ranked Athinaikos (13-5) 82-73 on Sunday. Athinaikos forced 27 Aris Thessal. turnovers. It was a great evening for American guard Keani Albanez (178, college: Gonzaga) who led her team to a victory scoring 26 points and 4 steals. Her fellow American import forward Kaylon Williams (190, college: Oklahoma) helped adding 9 points and 16 rebounds. Four Athinaikos players scored in double figures. At the losing side American-Guyanese guard Miriam McKenzie (177-90, college: Loyola, MD) responded with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals and American forward Brittni Montgomery (190-92, college: Cent.Florida) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Aris Thessal.'s coach George Ataktidis rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Athinaikos maintains second place with 13-5 record having seven points less than leader Olympiacos. Newly promoted Aris Thessal. keeps the tenth position with 14 games lost. Athinaikos will meet Kronos AD (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Aris Thessal.'s supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Thessaloniki Panathlitikos.
