Regular Season Round 47: Sendai 89ers - Toyama Grouses 64-88

There was a small surprise when sixth ranked Toyama Grouses (11-34) smashed on the road 6th ranked Sendai 89ers (12-33) 88-64 on Sunday. Toyama Grouses dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Sendai 89ers' 42 and made 21-of-25 free shots (84.0 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Toyama Grouses made 7 blocks. Sendai 89ers were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was forward Naoki Uto (188-91) who had a triple-double by scoring 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. American forward Sam Willard (205-88, college: Pacific, agency: Pensack Sports) chipped in 19 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field). Five Toyama Grouses players scored in double figures. South African center Tshilidzi Nephawe (208-89, college: N.Mexico St.) produced 9 points and 9 rebounds and American guard Wendell White (198-84, college: UNLV) added 15 points respectively for the hosts. Sendai 89ers' coach Takeo Mabashi gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Toyama Grouses maintains sixth place with 11-34 record which they share with defeated Sendai 89ers. Loser Sendai 89ers keep the sixth position with 33 games lost. Toyama Grouses will face higher ranked Yokohama BC (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
