Regular Season Round 52: Yamagata - Gunma 78-73

There was a minor upset when top-ranked Gunma (32-18) was defeated on the road by third ranked Yamagata (25-25) 78-73 on Sunday. Yamagata made 23-of-26 free shots (88.5 percent) during the game, while Gunma only scored five points from the stripe. Strangely Gunma outrebounded Yamagata 50-33 including 20 on the offensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of swingman Mitsutaka Izawa (194-93) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and point guard Yuichi Ishikawa (173-87) who added 10 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side American center Marcus Cousin (211-86, college: Houston) responded with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) and Nigerian forward Abdullahi Kuso (206-84, college: Tallahassee CC) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds. Four Gunma players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Yamagata maintains third position with 25-25 record having ten points less than leader Shimane SM, which they share with Ehime OV. Loser Gunma still keeps top place with 18 games lost. Yamagata will face league's second-placed Fukushima on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Gunma will play against Iwate Big Bulls and hope to win that game.
