Second Stage Round 10: Sparta - Contern 100-87
Date: April 8, 2017
We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when sixth ranked Sparta (12-15) beat 5th ranked Contern (13-14) in Bertrange 100-87 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Sparta. Contern was better in fourth quarter 18-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Sparta looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Contern was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for American forward Brad Reese (200-88, college: Texas Tech) who helped to win the game recording 29 points and 9 rebounds. The other American import forward Titus Robinson (201-90, college: Buffalo) contributed with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks for the winners. Reese is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Sparta's coach Philippe Giberti used an eleven-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Jesse Morgan (196-91, college: Temple) replied with 27 points (made all of his nine free throws !!!) and international point guard Raul Birenbaum (182-89) added 21 points, 7 assists and 4 steals in the effort for Contern. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Sparta maintains sixth position in League with 12-15 record. Loser Contern keeps the fifth place with 14 games lost. Sparta will face higher ranked Etzella (#3) in Ettelbruck in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Contern will play at home against the league's second-placed Musel Pikes and hope to win that game.
