Regular Season Round 28: Hapoel T-A - Maccabi Rishon 89-98
Date: April 22, 2017
Very significant was Maccabi Rishon's (#8) 98-89 road victory against 7th ranked Hapoel Tel-Aviv. It looked good early as Hapoel Tel-Aviv took a 1-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Maccabi Rishon had a 23-19 second period charge getting the lead and Hapoel Tel-Aviv was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 89-98. Maccabi Rishon made 17-of-22 charity shots (77.3 percent) during the game. Maccabi Rishon outrebounded Hapoel Tel-Aviv 40-17 including a 15-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. The winners were led by American power forward Charles Thomas (203-86, college: Arkansas) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds and naturalized Polish point guard Oded Brandwein (179-88) supported him with 15 points and 5 assists. Maccabi Rishon's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even 20 points and 5 assists by American point guard Mark Lyons (185-89, college: Arizona, agency: Higher Vision Sports) did not help to save the game for Hapoel Tel-Aviv. His fellow American import swingman Branden Dawson (198-93, college: Michigan St.) added 20 points for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Maccabi Rishon have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion (14-14) moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Ironi Nahariya. Hapoel Tel-Aviv lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth position with 15 games lost. Maccabi Rishon will play against Galil Gilboa (#11) in Rosh Pina in the next round. Hapoel Tel-Aviv will play on the road against the league's leader Hapoel Eilat having rather not much hope for a victory.
