Regular Season Round 9: Cairns M. - Townsville H. 88-70

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both leader Cairns Marlins and bottom-ranked Townsville Heat had identical 0-0 record. This time Cairns Marlins used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Hermit Park 88-70 on Friday night. Townsville Heat was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 4-point lead after three quarters before a 36-14 charge of Cairns Marlins, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Townsville Heat's 32. Cairns Marlins forced 22 Townsville Heat turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Point guard Damon Heuir (191-91, college: S.Utah) stepped up and scored 29 points and 5 assists for the winners and guard Anthony Fisher (187-94) chipped in 15 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. Cairns Marlins' coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. The best for the losing side was the former international swingman Peter Crawford (193-79) with 16 points and 6 assists and American power forward Justin Baker (203-89, college: Utah Valley) scored 15 points and 8 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Cairns Marlins maintains third place in League with 1-0 record having thirteen points less than leader Sydney Comets. Loser Townsville Heat still closes the standings with one game lost. Cairns Marlins will face South West Metro Pirates (#9) in Runcorn in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Townsville Heat will play at home against South West Metro Pirates (#9) and looks forward to get finally their first victory.
