Very expected game when bottom-ranked South West Metro Pirates (0-2) were rolled over on the road by top-ranked Cairns Marlins (2-0) 108-79 on Saturday. Cairns Marlins forced 20 South West Metro Pirates turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. South West Metro Pirates were plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. Point guard Damon Heuir (191-91, college: S.Utah) fired 28 points for the winners. The former international power forward Alexander Loughton (206-83, college: ODU) chipped in 21 points (made all of his seven free throws). Five Cairns Marlins players scored in double figures. American forward Tanner McGrew (203-93, college: W.Virg.Wesl., agency: Duran International) produced a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds and guard Ryan Vines (178-91, college: Co.Georgia) added 12 points and 5 assists respectively for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cairns Marlins moved-up to second place in League. Loser South West Metro Pirates still closes the standings with two games lost. Cairns Marlins will face Brisbane Spartans (#6) on the road in the next round. South West Metro Pirates will play against Rollers (#12) and hope to get finally their first victory.
