Not a big story in a game in Runcorn where 11th ranked Pirates (1-3) were defeated by leader Meteorettes (6-0) 92-84 on Sunday. Meteorettes forced 19 Pirates turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Pirates were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for power forward Nadeen Payne (188-93) who led her team to a victory scoring 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. New Zealand guard Micaela Cocks (174-86, college: Oregon) helped adding 22 points and 7 assists. Swingman Stephanie Bairstow (188-94, college: Utah St.) responded with 25 points and 5 rebounds and American center Shelby Cheslek (196-92, college: Gonzaga) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds. Five Meteorettes and four Pirates players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Meteorettes maintains first place in League with 6-0 record. Loser Pirates keep the eleventh position with three games lost. Meteorettes will face Cyclones (#5) in Rockhampton in the next round. Pirates will play on the road against Mountaineers (#14) in Toowoomba and hope to win that game.
