Regular Season Round 5: Luoyang - Henan 142-130

There was a surprise result when twelfth ranked Luoyang (2-3) defeated at home 4th placed Henan (3-2) 142-130 on Wednesday. The hosts trailed by 12 points at the halftime before their 84-60 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Luoyang made 31-of-38 free shots (81.6 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Luoyang made 12 blocks. Henan was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. American point guard Russ Smith (183-91, college: Louisville) stepped up and scored 81 points (!!!), 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals for the winners and South Sudanese-Lebanese center Ater Majok (208-87, college: Connecticut) chipped in 29 points, 15 rebounds and 9 blocks. Nigerian-American point guard Josh-Emmanuel Akognon (180-86, college: CS Fullerton) responded with 46 points (!!!) (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) and American-Nigerian center Chris Otule (211-90, college: Marquette) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. Five Henan players scored in double figures. Luoyang moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Beijing and Chongqing. Loser Henan dropped to the fifth position with two games lost. Luoyang will face Beijing (#10) on the road in the next round. Henan will play against Hunan (#3) in Changsha and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
