Regular Season Round 3: America - Paulistano 59-76

There was a minor upset in Rio Preto where America (1-3) was defeated by Paulistano (1-2) 76-59 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Paulistano. America was better in third quarter 15-12. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding America to just 5 points in first quarter. Paulistano made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. They outrebounded America 44-29 including a 36-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was point guard Yago Dos Santos (178-99) who scored 23 points and 6 assists. The former international Jhonatan Luz dos Santos (196-87) chipped in 14 points. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Darnell Artis (175, college: Gwynedd-Mercy) who recorded 17 points and swingman Lucas Rosa (193-94) added 8 points and 7 steals respectively. Both coaches used bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Paulistano will face Mogi (#3) in Mogi das Cruzes in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. America will play on the road against Pinheiros (#4) in Sao Paolo and hope to win that game.
