Regular Season Round 1: BC Nokia - Espoo United 90-87

The biggest surprise of round 1 in Korisliiga took place in Nokia where host BC Nokia (1-0) edged Espoo United (1-1) 90-87 on Saturday evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when BC Nokia made 8 blocks. The game was dominated by American players. Forward Lawrence Gilbert (200-86, college: La-Monroe, agency: Mansfield and Associates) fired 24 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Point guard Vincent Council (186-90, college: Providence) chipped in 20 points and 5 assists. BC Nokia's coach Ville Tuominen used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Guard Omar Calhoun (198-93, college: Connecticut) produced 33 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds (made all of his nine free throws !!!) and forward Darious Moten (199-92, college: Mercer) added 16 points and 8 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Espoo United will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest. BC Nokia will try to continue on its current victory against Tampereen Pyrinto on the road.
