Important game to mention about took place in Kyoto. Kyoto Hannar. (2-0) saved a 2-point victory at home edging San-en NeoPhoenix (0-2) 65-63 on Sunday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The hosts were already 14 points ahead after 3 quarters before a 23-11 San-en NeoPhoenix's run in the last quarter cut the lead to 65-63 at the end of the game. Kyoto Hannar. dominated on the defensive end, holding San-en NeoPhoenix to just 7 points in first quarter. They outrebounded San-en NeoPhoenix 44-30 including 33 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for American center Joshua Smith (208-92, college: Georgetown) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 16 rebounds. Zimbabwean-American Julian Mavunga (203-90, college: Miami, OH, agency: Pensack Sports) contributed with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Kyoto Hannar.'s coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Canadian center Scott Morrison (213-86, college: Portland St.) answered with 10 points and 9 rebounds and point guard Tatsuya Suzuki (169-91) added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for San-en NeoPhoenix. Kyoto Hannar. will play against Chiba Jets on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. San-en NeoPhoenix will play against Hitachi Sunrockers in Tokyo and hopes to get finally their first victory.
