Regular Season Round 1: Breakers - Taipans 71-82

Date: October 8, 2017
The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of New Zealand Breakers (0-1) in Auckland on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by Cairns Taipans (2-0) 82-71. The guests trailed by 4 points at the halftime before their 43-28 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. 30 personal fouls committed by New Zealand Breakers helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Scoochie Smith (188-94, college: Dayton) fired 18 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. The former international swingman Stephen Weigh (202-87) chipped in 17 points and 7 rebounds. Cairns Taipans' coach Aaron Fearne used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. New Zealand forward Thomas Abercrombie (198-87, college: Washington St.) produced 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks and Dominican-American point guard Edgar Sosa (190-88, college: Louisville) added 15 points respectively for lost side. Cairns Taipans are looking forward to face Adelaide 36ers (#4) in Findon in the next round. New Zealand Breakers will play on the road against Bullets in Brisbane and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
